It's the Gary Coleman Web-a-thon!
Tuesday, November 16, 1999 | 02:12 a.m.
This is just plain weird. Some web dev pranksters have set up a site selling lighters, candles, t-shirts and other knick-knacks emblazoned with an obey giant-like Gary Coleman face. All proceeds go towards paying off Gary's $72,000 credit card debt.

LeoFest!
Tuesday, November 16, 1999 | 02:03 a.m.
So Mr. DiCaprio is using his far-reaching fame and influence to start a digital film festival. I have no idea what to think about this bizarre development, and I am curious as to where he got the idea. Come on, you think Leo has time to surf the web between mountains of blow and naked supermodels? Yeah, that's what I thought.

The Sacred Heart Auto League

My mother got this in the mail a couple of years ago, and nobody has ever believed me. (I'm so sad that the Jesus of the Week is ending!)

Ooh, all of Beck's videos are online!
Sunday, November 14, 1999 | 06:12 p.m.
Thanks to Yuppie Slayer/Bring the Rock. I love Beck (he's like every NY indierock boy I ever knew) and I'm excited for this album, which by all accounts is super cheesy R&B influenced. Yay.

Picked up a copy of the new pressing of 4/30/96, a live Jawbreaker record that's been out of print for eons. The sound is really great and includes three unreleased songs (Gemini, Esme Needs Her Story, and Shirt). Now I just have to find a copy of Dear You on CD for less than $25 bucks (damn David Geffen and his shitty record company to hell).

Oh, and on the indie rock tip, read an interview with my friend Mark of Pillowfight. The guy didn't even tell anyone about it, I had to find out from a weblog. Geez.

Hey now, you're an asshole

It's Mark McGrath, lead singer of Sugar Ray and sometime Madonna escort. Here's some fuel to add to the argument "Sugar Ray sucks".

Why Me?
Sunday, November 14, 1999 | 05:38 p.m.
This is an article written by Jodie Foster in 1982 for Esquire magazine. It was written in response to John Hinkley's attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan, and it's fascinating. Jodie was at Yale at the time, and she talks about what she did at college and the contrast between being in school and making films. I just wish she would make a decent film again and stop starring in crap like Anna and the King.

The Dollar Stretcher

This is like a 90's home-ec textbook. Advice on cleaning, budgeting, cooking, personal finance, etc., all sent in my random readers who wanna share tips on how to pack an interesting lunch and spending less on your sweepstaking budget.

Greg Knight's Patio Culture
Saturday, November 13, 1999 | 07:28 p.m.
A page about 50's suburban living, one of my pet topics to rant about. This page has some totally interesting information (and great vintage photos) about the cocktail-n-jello-mold lifestyle, but it's completely romanticized in a nostalgic manner. I appreciate fond regard of one's childhood, but as someone who grew up in the suburbs, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But the page is still very pretty.

Le Tigre
Saturday, November 13, 1999 | 07:01 p.m.
Those of you who are regular readers of tiara (all three of you) may remember that the Kathleen Hanna Julie Ruin project was my favorite CD of 1998, and it's looking like this new Le Tigre CD is gonna be on the list this year. It's similar to Julie Ruin, lots of samplings and sounds cribbed from god knows where, with guitars and handclaps galore. I love the whole album, but "Hot Topic" (coming after yesterday's entry) just rules: they name drop a list of hot cha people including Tammy Rae Cartland, Sleater-Kinney, Gayatri Spivak, Dorothy Allison, Angela Davis, Nina Simone, the Slits, Billie Jean King, James Baldwin, Ariel Skrag.. damn, it's like a resource list for a big ass research project. Kathleen Hanna is one of the greatest feminist artists working today, and it's my good luck that she works in the punk rock medium. This interview is just great, with Kathleen, Sadie and Johanna talking about how bad they wanna be on The View.
